You might be wondering how this is possible when most dogs just lie down when they get hungry. Well there are two reasons for this and I will explain them both in this article. First we will discuss why your dog will just lie down when he gets hungry.
It is a natural instinct that all dogs have to eat but some dogs are more susceptible to this than others are. You see, some dogs have a very fast metabolism which means their stomach acids come out quicker than the other dogs. When they do this, it causes a burning sensation which they feel like lying down. Other dogs might just flat out refuse to eat. So if your dog has one of the first two problems then you need a technique to teach your dog to lay down.
It’s not hard to understand why dogs don’t want to eat. The first reason is they always have to walk around afterwards which wastes energy. Another reason is that the amount of food that they can consume is very restricted. There is only so much that can be taken at a time and some dogs cannot even fit in their mouth without throwing up. And lastly when they do sleep at night the last thing they need to do is go pooping in their bed.
So how can you fix this problem? Well if you start to correct the problems mentioned above then your dog will quickly learn to lie down when he wants to sleep. All dogs have a tendency to want to lie down in order to relax. This is because it allows their stomachs to empty out therefore relieving any pressure which causes a burning sensation.
In order to teach your dog to lie down just start by sitting him on your left and then move your right leg and place your foot on top of his left. Your dog should start to lie down on your leg and stay there until you remove your foot. When he does that praise him and give him a treat and lots of love. This is a wonderful technique to teach your dog to lie down but to make sure that your dog understands that lying down means that he is relaxed and comfortable. If he learns that praise him and give him lots of love and attention as this will further motivate him into lying down.
Another technique to teach your dog to lay down is to use your legs. Stand with your feet apart and place both of your hands on your dog’s back. Slowly stand up and place one leg on each side of your dog’s back, making sure that it is placed directly under his stomach. Hold this position for around 5 seconds, giving your dog lots of positive reinforcement.
The last technique is a more vigorous version but this will make sure that your dog gets the message that lying down is what he wants to do. Stand with one leg in front of your dog, his other hand on his stomach. Lean forward slightly and take a deep breath. Before you know it, your dog will begin to lie down and relax.
It’s a very simple technique to teach your dog to lie down and relax but just remember that it is important that your dog understand what you are trying to tell him. Praise and reward him when he does it and don’t forget that it takes time and patience. You will be amazed at how fast dogs learn to lie down and relax if you use these three techniques consistently.
