Teaching Your Puppy Sit Is Easier Than You Think

Teaching your puppy to sit can be one of the most important dog training tips you can learn. Sit commands are used when you want your puppy to do something else but are unsure what that is. Many dogs do not know how to sit until they are trained. The problem with teaching your puppy to sit, is that it can be quite difficult to enforce if your puppy does not know the sitting pattern from day one. Here are some tips to help teach your puppy to sit commands.

Dogs are like little kids, they do not always understand where they should sit and what they should sit for. It’s best to start off with a sit in the house before trying to teach them to go outside. This will give them a little more experience with the sit command and eliminate confusion.

You can reinforce your puppy with treats as a start. When you say the sit command, give your dog a treat immediately. This will encourage them to sit and give the sit command each time. Try to use the same treat each time to get him to sit. When he responds well to only getting treats, then you can increase the number of treats.

When starting out, you should not use any kind of physical force. You should also never yell at your puppy or punish him in any way. If your dog tries to jump out of your lap or command your attention, then stop whatever you are doing and return back to your puppy immediately. Yelling or disciplining your puppy will only make him fear you and will probably discourage him from sitting on command. You should also not reward your puppy with anything just because he sits. Puppies are very smart and will quickly figure out what you are trying to teach them and will not respond to rewards just because they were given.

Teaching your puppy how to sit may seem a little bit confusing at first but as long as you are consistent, it should be fairly easy. It is important to understand that training a dog how to sit is not just about punishing or rewarding them when they do something wrong. It is about making the dog understand that they need to sit each time you tell them to sit. This will help them learn what to expect if they do not follow your instructions. By consistency, we mean teaching them to sit each time you want them to sit.

The first thing you want to do when training how to teach your puppy to sit is to tell him the sit command. After he responds to the sit command, you then want to take him to his place. Ideally, the spot you would want him to sit in is one where there is a lot of space. This will make it easier for him to learn to sit and will make it easier for you to discipline him if he does not sit in the spot you have placed him in.

You will want to teach your puppy how to sit by repeating the word sit over. This will start to get him used to hearing the word sit. Once he has responded to the word sit, you can then move on to giving him verbal praise. This can either come from your mouth or from his. You want to emphasize the word sit over other words so he will focus on the word sit.

As long as you are consistent with your commands and treats, your dog will eventually learn how to sit. Dogs need to learn that if they are going to listen to us, they must sit before moving forward. By repeating the words over, your puppy will start to realize that if he hears and responds to the word sit, he will move forward towards the sitting position.
